Dogs are very social animals. So we should not be surprised that they feel best in the herd or alongside their guardian. Some quadrupeds endure separation times calmly, sleeping most of the day. However, there are those who cannot stay alone, and transfer their frustration to destroying furniture or baying for hours. When a dog used to our constant presence is suddenly left alone at home, it feels fear and does not know what is going on. Therefore, training must be started at an early stage of your pet’s socialization.
I suffer because you are gone
A dog generally grows up without its canine family. When a puppy or an adult dog arrives at our home, we become the guarantor of all goods for him. In the eyes of the dog, we provide him with safety, entertainment and food. Research on wolves shows that canines have a strong instinct to live in a pack. Also, the observations of wild dogs show that they are trying to find a herd to which they could join, so as not to live alone.
While we can, of course, teach dogs to endure solitude for several hours stoically, we must be aware that this is not a natural situation for them. Does this mean that due to such disposition of pets, we should avoid situations in which our pet stays at home alone? Absolutely not. Our job as owners is to show the pooch that solitude can be safe, relaxing and tasty.
