What is the best way to help your dog survive the lonely hours?
Teether toys
A great way to deal with boredom is to provide your pet with favorite toys. If you leave your dog alone with a toy, make sure it is safe. It cannot have sharp elements that the pooch could swallow. It is worth choosing those that calm the dog rather than stimulate it. A bouncing or squeaking ball will be more effective during a walk. At home, it is better to use teethers, soft balls of yarn or stuffed animals.
Gadgets
An effective solution for going out of the house, also used as an auxiliary in the treatment of separation anxiety, are the olfactory mat and the sphero-gusto (popular kong). The mat with long and thick fringes is used to hide the flavors that the pooch has to smell. A similar role is played by Kong gadgets for filling food, from which the pooch has to extract treats. This activity will engage the dog at least until it licks all its contents.
Since dogs associate our smells best, it’s a good idea to leave a garment that smells like us for your pet.
Comfortable bedding
If there are places your pooch is not allowed to enter when you are at home, close them also when you go out. However, do not close it in too small a space or in the bathroom. This will only increase his stress and separation anxiety. Make sure that the dog’s bed is comfortable, soft and pleasant to the touch. It should be a kind of asylum for the dog, where feels safe and willingly rests during the absence of the guardian. The lair should be large enough to accommodate your pet’s favorite items, such as stuffed animals, balls. Dogs like to put these things on the bed and sleep with them.
If, despite training with the lair, the dog still feels alien and insecure in an empty house, it is worth trying a kennel cage. It acts as a sanctuary, just like a burrow in which it is quiet, cozy and safe. You should never force your dog into a cage without training. It is best to start training with a puppy because the older the dog, the more difficult it will be to get used to him.
